First Conviction in Karnataka for Tiger Poaching

Three poachers have been convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment by the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Bangalore. The three had been arrested in an operation in 2008 for possession of tiger paws, tiger pelts and bones. The conviction is a first of its kind for the State. Alwar, June 20, 2011: In a landmark judgement, the Court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate – II, Alwar, Rajasthan convicted noted wildlife poacher Juhru and his associates, Tayyeb, Ramzan, Noora and Jiwan Das, sentencing them to a maximum imprisonment of seven years and a fine of Rs 50,000, in a case related to tiger hunting in the Sariska Tiger Reserve in 2005.

RTI Response from Environment Ministry Indicates Nearly 200 Tigers Poached in the Last 12 Years

An RTI application filed with the Ministry of Environment and Forests reveals that 197 tigers were killed through poaching between 1999 and 2011. The ministry also attributed the local extinction of tigers in Sariska and Panna to poaching. The worst years were 2001 and 2002, where 36 tigers were poached in each year. Tiger skin seized, three arrested in Nepal; Nepal to sign MOU with India

KATHMANDU, July 28: A tiger skin, 8 feet 7 inches by 7 feet 7 inches, was seized in Bhaktapur on Wednesday.

Police arrested three individuals — Rahul Shahi, 18, and Raju Shahi, 26, who are residents of Golmathe, Ward no 7, Bhaktapur district, and Manoj Kapali, 30, of Panauti , Kavre district — along with the tiger skin.

The investigation team involved in the seizure was led by Wildlife Conservation Nepal (WCN) and supported by Bhaktapur district police.
