Prominent Environmental Activist Ramesh Agarwal Sent to Jail

Ramesh Agarwal, a prominent environmental activist has been sent to jail on charges of misbehaving and inciting violence. Jindal Power Limited had filed a case against him last year, accusing him of fomenting trouble during a company hearing on May 8, 2010 in Tamnar Village, seeking environmental clearance for its 2400 MW thermal power plant. Last year, Agarwal had petitioned Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh against the company, pointing out that the company had started construction work for its Thermal power plant even before environmental clearance had been obtained.
