Q: Does a Tiger Reserve enjoy a higher protection status than a National Park?

Asked by Swarna Venkataraman, Bangalore
A: Most Tiger Reserves have been created by notifying existing Sanctuaries or National Parks and therefore have a similar status. However, penalties for a hunting offence in a Tiger Reserve is higher – maximum fine can extend to  fifty lakh rupees and imprisonment of not less than seven years in case of a second or subsequent conviction.
