Flowerpeckers constitute the smallest birds in India (7-8 cm) and the Pale-billed (Tickell’s) Flowerpecker is sometimes stated as being the smallest of them all — being just a little bigger than a normal human thumb!
On an outing to the Bannerghatta-Kaggalipura Road, on the outskirts of Bangalore, on the morning of 2 Sept 2012, we found that this little Pale-billed Flowerpecker fledgling had fallen out of the nest and was not confident enough to fly. Two boys had saved the little creature from the stray dogs hovering nearby. Conservation is not always critically endangered species, sometimes it’s about critically endangered individuals as well!
